Chapter Eleven

Once Danyl was finished explaining his idea, we ate. All of us mulled it over in silence, and from the looks Carson kept giving me, I knew he was wanting to tell me to let them test it out before I went through the tunnel myself. It would be the smart thing… We did have three days, after all. They could test it tomorrow and I could go through the next day.

But what if it took longer to get to Poseidon’s hall? Or what if he refused to see me? No, every second was precious and the risk was worth taking.

“We should get some rest,” Danyl said after we’d eaten.

It wasn’t a very filling meal, but it would be enough to keep us going. The cats had all already given up on the scraps and were curled in the boxes that Carson had found for them. The most worrisome part of all this was that they were going to be left alone. Danyl and Carson both promised me that they’d be okay, that they’d put godly protection on them before we left, and Poseidon’s temple would be happy to look after them when we took them there.

That didn’t stop me from worrying, though.

“I don’t want to rest,” I murmured, wrapping my arms around myself. “I won’t be able to stop my brain from wandering, and I don’t want to go down that rabbit hole.”

“What do you want to do, then?” Danyl asked. His voice, as per usual, was hard and cold. But I’d started to realize that just because that was how it sounded to my ears didn’t mean that was how he meant it. He was closed off, it was true. He held things close to his heart. That didn’t mean he didn’t feel.

And Carson… The feel of his lips on mine still burned through my mind. As well as the shame he’d felt so clearly for his actions.

I looked at first one and then the other. In the three years I’d been in Atlantis, I’d had plenty of opportunities to have male companionship. For some reason that I never could understand, I hadn’t been attracted to any of them. Once I invited a guy home just so that I wouldn’t be alone, but I hadn’t felt anything toward him. In the end, I’d disappointed him by cutting things off after a brief, unsatisfying make out session.

So it was unusual for me to sit here and have this fire burning under my skin. My core clenched as my gaze moved over their bodies. The tattoos against their hard muscles, the flash of the silver crescent on their collarbones.

“Before all this happened, were we close?” I asked them, still deciding what these feelings were.

“We were,” Carson replied with a nod. “The three of us would do everything together. Whenever Poseidon had his parties, we’d sneak away and play pranks on the others. This one time, we knew that Lexus and his latest lover were holed up in a cupboard,
